While alligators strike fear into the minds of many, the truth is that gator attacks in the US are quite rare. According to Slate there have only been 13 fatal gator attacks from 2000 to 2013.
If you are caught facing an alligator and need to escape, your best bet is to run, as fast as you can, straight away. Alligators are relatively slow on land and they are aware of that. Typically they won’t chase prey on land, according to How Stuff Works. What you need is speed and you can run much faster in a straight line than in a zig-zag.
